How to Encrypt a USB Drive for Free

You may looking for some free encryption software for your USB drive or hard drive. A few days ago, I was trying to find a USB encryption software for my uncle. But finally I found myself seeking far and neglecting what lies close at hand. Actually, using the built-in Windows tool named BitLocker is the best as it is secure and requires no additional pay.

How to enable BitLocker to encrypt USB drive

First of all, you have to make sure that your computer’s operating system is any non-home flavor of Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10. Because home flavors of Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10 do not have BitLocker tool in them. Also, any version of Windows before Windows Vista does not have BitLocker.

1. Login with administrator account to your Windows.
2. Insert the USB drive to your computer and double click This PC on the desktop.
3. Right-click the USB drive and click Turn On BitLocker.

4. Choose how you want to unlock this drive. You can use a password or a smart card. Here I use a password to unlock the drive in this demonstration. (Using password will be more easier.)

5. Select a way to back up your recovery key. You can save it to your Microsoft account, a file on the computer, or print the recovery key. I choose save to a file.

Note: The recovery key is the backup key that you can use to access your encrypted USB drive in case you forget your password or lose your smart card.

6. In the Save BitLocker recovery key as box, choose a save location, and then click Save.
7. on the following Choose how much of your drive to encrypt window, choose Encrypt used disk space only, which would be faster, and click Next.

8. Click Start encrypting if you are ready.

9. Wait till the encrypt process complete. This will take a long time, please be patient.

How to turn off BitLocker

How to Put Your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch in DFU mode

What is DFU mode?

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is a state that allows you to put your iPhone to interface with iTunes, but does not load the latest version of iOS or bootloader onto it. That’s the main difference between DFU mode and recovery mode.

DFU mode allows you to change and choose the firmware you want to install onto your iPhone. For instance, you would use DFU mode if you want to install a previous version of iOS, jailbreak your iPhone or unlock your SIM. If standard recovery isn’t working for you to get your device back to working condition, DFU may help you out.

How to enter DFU mode

1. Plug your device into your computer and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes.
2. Turn off the device.
3. Hold the power button for 3 seconds.
4. Press and hold the Home button while continuing to hold the Power button. Do this for 10 seconds.
5. Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.

That’s it, you’re in DFU mode. This process works for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad so no matter what iOS device you’re using you can use this tutorial.

How to exit DFU mode

If you want to exit DFU mode, hold down the Sleep/Wake or Power button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Stuck in DFU Mode

If you get stuck in DFU mode and need to get out, just hold the power button and home button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. (See also: How to Get Out of DFU Mode)
